SCR Engines in use today

SCR is currently being employed on more than 250,000 diesel-powered vehicles at work on Europe’s roads today. It is also the system preferred by leading on-highway vehicle manufacturers including DAF, Mercedes Benz, Volvo and Renault Trucks.

Daimler trucks

Daimler Trucks BlueTec branded SCR technology—also being used in Daimler Group brands such as Mercedes-Benz—was trialled initially in early 2007 by a reputable national fleet. The technology has since been adopted into major national fleets Australia-wide, with fuel efficiency and overall driveability key points in the success of adoption of this new technology.

Further testing by Daimler Trucks has showed that the technology adds to the efficiency of the truck engine and cuts fuel consumption by up to 6 percent. The BlueTec ‘Actros’ truck showed excellent fuel efficiency over the flat stretch between Port Augusta and Adelaide, achieving 1.6km per litre compared with 1.3km per litre for other trucks in the fleet.

In Europe, BlueTec’s capabilities have exceeded expectations where the technology is fitted to cars, trucks and buses. Daimler Trucks chairman of the board Dieter Zetsche told shareholders in Germany that in July 2007, more than 40,000 trucks and buses were already equipped with BlueTec technology.

Volvo

Mark Hughes, National Marketing and Communications Manager for Volvo Australia, said that SCR trucks were outperforming expectations for Volvo’s Australian operations where both EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and SCR models are available from Volvo. “Demand for SCR trucks has gone beyond our expectations; customers are choosing SCR models over our EGR models.”

Mark Hughes also maintains that SCR provides a lot more than simply low emissions and increased fuel efficiency; service intervals are also reduced as is wear and tear and oil use due to the engine running cooler thanks to SCR.

National Sales Manger for Volvo Trucks, James Morris thinks the consumer reasoning for SCR is obvious. “Customers clearly have been attracted to the productivity, performance and reliability benefits that the SCR solution provides.”
